Advocating for your Child

As the parent of a child with a disability, you have two goals:
To ensure that the school provides your child with a "free appropriate public education" that includes "specially designed instruction... to meet the [child's] unique needs..." (20 U.S.C. §1401) and to build a healthy working relationship with the school.

Wrights.law is in invaluable link for parents and professionals serving children with autism. The website includes Yellow Pages for Kids with Disabilities as well as a Directory of Disabilities Organizations and Information Groups, Directory of State Departments of Education, a Directory of Parent Training Information Centers, a Directory of Legal and Advocacy Resources, and a Directory of International Resources.

Wrights.law also publishes The Special Ed Advocate, a free online newsletter about special education legal issues, cases, tactics, and strategy, effective educational methods, and Internets links. Subscribers to The Special Ed Advocate receive announcements and "alerts" about new cases and news events, new uploads, conference announcements, special offers, and more.

The Autism Education Network is a virtual help desk with a host of invaluable resources specifically designed to save you time. You will find links, publications, articles, books, as well as free downloads regarding parent advocacy (PDF), special education law, and your child's rights to a free appropriate public education. Our network is made of parents and professionals just like you-people committed to make a difference based on their experience caring for or working with a child or children with autism.
